CERITRANS: Cerita Transpuan Lintas Batas
Trans Stories Transcending Borders
A collaborative prose, poetry, and performance project elevating the voices of trans women.
Produced under our House of the Unsilenced activities series, Trans Stories Transcending Borders (in Indonesian, CERITRANS: Cerita Transpuan Lintas Batas) is a collaborative arts project for trans women in the greater Jakarta area to share their stories through prose, poetry, and filmed performances. The project aims to elevate and celebrate trans women’s voices, and increase public awareness, respect, and empathy for trans stories and experiences.
For this project, InterSastra has partnered with Eliza Vitri & Infinity, an initiative introducing a collaborative creative method based on writing workshops and guerrilla dissemination of the resulting works; Sanggar Swara, a Jakarta-based school and community of trans women; and Khairani Barokka, a UK-based poet and disability justice activist. The project is supported by the Connection through Culture grant from the British Council.
From March-May this year, ten trans women participated in prose and poetry writing workshops to craft their stories. The stories were then edited, translated, illustrated, and adapted for performance. The ten storytellers then took part in workshops and rehearsals to hone their performances, which were then filmed. The stories, complete with illustrations and QR codes linking to the performance videos on YouTube, were printed as posters, which will be distributed by a guerilla team to be displayed in public places in Jakarta, surrounding cities, and in the UK. To create a safe, inspiring space for our work process, we provided a psychological first aid team (PFA) to assist in the event that a participant experiences an emotional response such as hysterical or triggered by traumatic memories. We formulated ethical guidelines for all activities, together with Sanggar Swara and other partners. In addition, we conducted risk assessment and management before and during the activities. We also held sessions on “How to be Allies” for trans women, conducted by representatives from Sanggar Swara. These sessions were attended by all PFA officers, creative collaborators, film production crews, and other parties working on CERITRANS.
The stories, poems, and performances have been collected in this digital library, which will be grown by Sanggar Swara post-CERITRANS to exhibit more stories and art works of trans women.

Concept
Eliza Vitri & Infinity is the latest initiative by novelist and artist Eliza Vitri Handayani. This collaborative arts project is based on workshops with communities who want to claim space for their voices and experiences through creative works. Together the collaborators and Eliza will craft stories, adapt them into innovative forms, and disseminate them through unexpected means. Ceritrans uses this artistic method. Community Partner
Sanggar Swara is a school and community for young trans women that combines classes, internships, and other forms of support to promote independence and empowerment for trans women within the frameworks of human rights, gender, and sexuality, and to increase the public’s understanding of diversity. The aim is to reduce the stigma, violence, and discrimination towards trans women in the Jabodetabek (Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, Bekasi) area. Sanggar Swara was formed in June 2006 as a sub-program of Srikandi Sejati Foundation. For CERITRANS, Swara is represented by Kanzha Vinaa and Rere Agistya.
Program Organizers
InterSastra, founded in 2012, is an arts community working to fight marginalization and break barriers across society through publication, translation, art projects, workshops, and mentoring. InterSastra has published bilingual literary series such as Unrepressed (2018-2020) and Diverse Indonesia: Next Generation (2015-2016). It has mentored dozens of emerging writers and translators. Its arts projects include House of the Unsilenced (2018, 2019), Fashion ForWords (2019), and Ceritrans (2021).
House of the Unsilenced, first initiated through InterSastra in 2018, is an arts project that matches artists with survivors of gender-based violence to create new works and speak up together for gender justice. The works are then showcased in a house dedicated to celebrate the survivors’ creativity and courage.
InterSastra and House of the Unsilenced are represented by Gaia Khairina, Zinda Adinta, and Rajendra Amira.
UK Partner
Khairani Barokka is a writer and artist from Jakarta, based in London. She is currently Associate Artist at the National Centre for Writing and Research Fellow at UAL’s Decolonising Arts Institute. Among Okka's honours, she was a UNFPA Indonesian Young Leader Driving Social Change, an NYU Tisch Departmental Fellow, and Modern Poetry in Translation's Inaugural Poet-in-Residence.

Gaia Khairina is keenly interested in literature and the arts, and is currently educating herself on feminist, urban, and social justice issues. After graduating with a liberal arts degree in 2015, she now lives in Bogor, West Java, and works in the environmental sector. She has written poetry in Indonesian and English since the age of eight and hopes to publish a collection of illustrated poetry one day.
Social Media Coordinator
Zinda Adinta writes poetry and works as a freelance French teacher and social media content writer. She has a degree in French Literature and has studied various literary genres. In the past, she has worked in hospitality, specializing in marketing communications and public relations. Her love of books, music, films, and nature inspired her first bilingual poetry book, Kelana Imaji. She occasionally reviews hotel and dining experiences through the Instagram account @eatstayholic. Currently, she is working on her second book of poems and sometimes sharing a poem or two through the account @lepoemdecerveau and participating in the online writing club @cswritersclub.
Project Officer
Rajendra Amira is a freelance writer, researcher, and performing artist. They have a B.A. in Philosophy concentrating in Political Philosophy, Human Rights, and Identity. Their creative work is influenced by introspective forms of storytelling and spirituality, and they love ginger tea on rainy afternoons. They have performed for Melati Suryodarmo in her exhibition Why Let the Chicken Run?, Hari Krishnan’s mixed bill production inDance: SKIN, and a part of CONTRA-TIEMPO's 2019 Futuro Dance Intensive. They occasionally post their poetry on Instagram at @rajendra_amira.
STORYTELLERS
Anggun Pradesha
A documentary filmmaker of Emak di Jambi, Emak Menolak, and Saatnya Orang Muda. She is currently completing her fourth film. Runner-up for Miss Transchool 2011. A member of Sanggar Swara’s governing body 2013-2018. Worked as a finance officer for the central Indonesian Planned Parenthood Association (PKBI) branch in 2018-2021. She hopes CERITRANS will produce works that will reach a much broader audience.
Asya
She loves to dance since she was little, and that hobby became her profession. Unfortunately, the dance and performance industry has not fully accepted trans women. The dance industry, specifically that for television, is still heavily rooted in the patriarchal culture. Eventually Asya became a drag queen, which is not too far off from the art of dancing. In addition, Asya is Miss Transchool 2020/2021. She enjoys being a part of organizations and public speaking, especially if what is being discussed is useful for other people. Her life principle is tabur tuai (sow and reap): what we sow, we will reap. Asya wants the public to realize that trans women are strong and make many meaningful contributions to society.
Ayu Saree
Her hobbies are singing, acting, make-up, and making jokes on TikTok @ayusaree02. Currently she is having fun on TikTok to entertain herself, and if other people are also entertained then alhamdulillah. Aside from that, she can be found busy on her other social media platforms (Instagram @ayuu_sareeofficial, and on Facebook as Ayu Sabrina). She loves classical Indian films. Ayu hopes people will be entertained and moved when reading the stories in CERITRANS and that they will learn something valuable from the stories of trans women.
Ian Hugen
Content creator who identifies herself as a trans woman, active in digital segmentation of Indonesia. She is also a writer, self-love activist and fashion enthusiast. Currently, she works as a copywriter at one of the lifestyle media in Jakarta (Insitu.id). In addition, she also writes stories that she uploads on Instagram @ianhugen. Ian want her story to inspire the children who are born like her and assure them that there’s nothing wrong with them and that they are precious.
Keinarra Hana
A trans woman who grew up in the Riau islands and decided to leave her hometown to go to Jakarta in 2015. Currently, she works as finance officer for an organization that works for the transgender community. In addition, Hana is also a mother of two furry children, Kenichi and Kimochi, and often cares for domestic animals that live in the streets, for example by conducting street feeding with friends from the animal-lovers community. Hana wants to tell her life story and share the artistic works of trans women to a wide audience.
Kanzha Vinaa
A trans woman, activist, and feminist, Vinaa is actively fighting for the rights of LGBTIQ people. She is currently the chairperson of Sanggar Swara. She is also continuing her formal education and reaching her goals. Vinaa wants to share about the story of Sanggar Swara, from its founding to today.
Nabillah Saputri
Nabillah Saputri is an A-pink fangirl and a Leo girl. Her hobbies include writing for her blog and dancing. She is always open to new and interesting things. Nabillah wants to tell the story of a trans woman who chooses to wear the hijab for her personal and spiritual expression. She hopes her story will make people see her as a humanist and someone who is full of faith and wants only to do good.
Rari Rahmat
If asked what medium freely allows her to express herself, poetry would be the answer. Her favorite book is Perahu Kertas by Dee Lestari. Rari wants herself to be considered a woman, regardless of her physical appearance. She wants this world to be fair and equal for trans women. And she hopes that her writing can open minds.
Restya
This Miss Transchool 2017 hails from Purbalingga, Central Java. Her hobbies are exercising and cooking. She is very interested in all things that are new and full of challenges.
Rere Suketi
Rere Suketi is a trans woman who lives in a village in the province of Banten. She was once a street singer and sex worker to make a living. She loves Rhoma Irama, Rita Sugiarto, and all things pop and dangdut. Rere wants to share her experiences and hopes her story will open minds and make others better able to understand the lives of trans women.

Eliza Vitri Handayani is a novelist and artist passionate about achieving a more inclusive society through the arts. Her short stories and personal essays have appeared in international literary outlets, and her novel From Now On Everything Will Be Different (Vagabond Press, 2015) earned her a WrICE fellowship (2016) and invitations to various festivals. She is the creator of InterSastra literary community; House of the Unsilenced, art for gender justice; and Fashion ForWords, an innovative fashion showcase to speak out against oppression. She also co-founded As-Salam Collective, which holds study sessions to relearn Islam from feminist perspectives; the collective has also created the fashion collection Indonesian Muslim Looks (2019). Poetry-writing mentor
Khairani Barokka is a writer and artist from Jakarta, based in London. Her work has been presented widely, in over 15 countries, and work from her Annah, Infinite series of performance installations has been an Artforum Must-See. Okka's books include Indigenous Species (Tilted Axis; Vietnamese translation, AJAR Press), Stairs and Whispers: D/deaf and Disabled Poets Write Back (as co-editor; Nine Arches), and the poetry collections Rope and Ultimatum Orangutan (Nine Arches).
Performance mentor and director
Ruth Marini is a film and theater actor, director, and acting coach. She spent 16 years with Teater Satu, Lampung, and was named Indonesia's best monologue actress in 2007. In 2017 she moved to Jakarta and founded Sanggar Aktor Cilik Indonesia, which currently has dozens of members who are working in film and television. She also founded Actor Works, where film and television actors forge themselves. After three years working in film, she has starred in more than 10 box office movies, including Wiro Sableng, May the Devil Take You, Ratu Ilmu Hitam, Demi Waktu, Asih 2, Sementara Selamanya, and Wening. In 2018 she gained nominations for Indonesian Film Festival, Indonesian Movie Actor, Maya Award, Indonesia Box Office, and Festival Film Tempo. In theater, her two most recent performances were wayang orang Sang Sukrasana, and as Nyi Reso in WS Rendra's masterpiece performance Panembahan Reso. The first feature film she directed was Waktu Tanpa Buku, with a script by Lene Therese Teigen, translated by Faiza Mardzoeki.
Graphic designer and illustrator
Cindy Saja is a freelance graphic designer and illustrator. Her works are mostly about social issues in Indonesian society. Born in Jakarta, Cindy discovered her talent for drawing when she was a child. Wherever she holds a pencil, it's as if her hand moves by itself and begins drawing. After completing her fine arts degree, majoring in illustration, at the Jakarta Arts Institute in 2011, she started her career as an illustrator at the book publisher Kompas. While working, she received a scholarship to continue her master's degree in design at the Bandung Institute of Technology (2012-2014). She has collaborated with writers and artists such as Gouri Mirpuri, Butet Manurung, Erikar Lebang, Rene Suhardono, Rani Pramesti, and many more. Now, Cindy is freelancing at the book publisher Kompas, and is preparing her personal project. She continues to hone her illustrative skills and posts some of her works on the IG account @cindysaja.
FILM PRODUCTION TEAM
Brahmantyo Putra is a multidisciplinary artist specializing in documentary films, photojournalism, and art installations. In his career he has collaborated with various international artists to raise social, cultural and political topics through exhibitions in Indonesia and Australia. In 2018 he founded Seven Ten Media as a forum for filmmakers to explore the documentary form.
Riani Singgih is a documentary filmmaker and cinematographer. She is passionate about making films that address issues of human rights, minorities’ rights, and mental health. Her documentaries have appeared in more than 50 film festivals around the world, and her first documentary on LGBT stories has gained acclaim at 35 film festivals.
Rizky Rahad is an independent queer director and producer based in Jakarta, Indonesia. His work seeks to reimagine Indonesia’s hetero-patriarchal narrative through intimate collaborations with the fringes of society, from a Javanese dance troupe reviving an ancient drag tradition to Timorese women tattooing themselves to survive sexual slavery. As VICE’s first Indonesia producer, he helped build the Indonesia office’s video department from scratch, producing over 50 documentaries, and growing the channel from zero to over 500,000 subscribers in two years. Rizky’s work has been screened at Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival and South by Southwest Film Festival, and published by international media around the world including VICE, HBO, Discovery Channel, Vox, Boiler Room, and Stereogum. In 2019, Rizky was selected for the 69th Berlinale’s talent development program as a director.
Music Composer
Edacitra is a singer-songwriter who collaborates with Tengku Ariy as composer and producer. Together they have created the songs “Ada Pelangi di Langit Sore” whose lyrics were adapted from a poem by Wiji Thukul, “Fried Chicken No Chilli”, which was popularized by the band Caterpillar, “Jalan Setapak dan Layang-Layang”, which was sung by Rudi Syarif, and “Perempuan Sabana” whose lyrics were adapted from a poem by Diana Timoria, a poet from Sumba. Edacitra hails from Medan and is also the founder of Degil House, which houses several creative communities such as Hujan Kata-kata and Sirkam (Women's Creation Circulation). Currently, Edacitra, Tengku Ariy, and their collaborators at Hujan Kata-Kata are working on their second compilation album, featuring songs adapted from the works of well-known poets from Indonesia and abroad.
Film Editors
Sarah Adilah is a film director who graduated from the Multimedia Nusantara University Film. Her works Neraka in Telapak Kaki (2018) was nominated for best short documentary at FFI 2018, Gula dan Pasir (2018) was screened at World Cinema Amsterdam 2019, and Be Dara (2019) received a special mention of the Viddsee Award Indonesia 2019. Apart from directing, Sarah enjoys doing commercial work as a writer or editor. She is open to collaborations as a producer, as she done on the short film Pada Suatu Hari (2020) and the GoodPitch documentary project Hidup dengan Bencana (2021).
Abraham Risyad Adikuncoro, or Abe, was born in Jakarta, 1998. Active in the community since 2014, he is currently in his last year of university, majoring in architecture, and is trying his hands in the film industry.

Ade Kusumaningrum worked for UNESCO Jakarta Office before making her carrier in movie publicity since 2003 as the publicist for French Film Festival. Since then, she has been working as publicist for Korean Film Festival, XXI Short Film Festival, Europe On Screen, Colombia Film Festival, 100% Manusia Film Festival, and 50 movies, among others Ada Apa Dengan Cinta 2 (2016) and Wiro Sableng (2018).

TRANSLATORS
Tiffany Tsao is a writer and literary translator. She is the author of the Oddfits series, as well as The Majesties, which was longlisted for the 2019 Ned Kelly Award. Her translations of Indonesian fiction and poetry include Dee Lestari’s Paper Boats, Laksmi Pamuntjak’s The Birdwoman’s Palate, and Norman Erikson Pasaribu’s Sergius Seeks Bacchus, which was shortlisted for the 2021 NSW Premier’s Translation Prize.
Sebastian Partogi is a journalist, copywriter, and literary translator based in Ubud, Bali. He has translated the works of Ratih Kumala, Djenar Maesa Ayu, Sindhunata, and Feby Indirani into English. He is handling a number of vanity projects on the side.
Liswindio Apendicaesar is an Indonesian writer and translator. He is involved in Pawon Literary Community and is part of the editorial board of Pawon Literary Bulletin. In 2019, he was invited to Bengkulu Writers Festival and South Tangerang Literary Festival. In the same year, he joined InterSastra's translator team for the Unrepressed series. His pieces have been published or are forthcoming in several literary outlets, both national and international, such as Tempo, The Jakarta Post, Voice & Verse Poetry Hong Kong, Oyez Review, etc. His collection of short stories Malam untuk Ashkii Dighin (Night for Ashkii Dighin) was published in 2017. Recently, his Indonesian translation of Enid Blyton's children’s poetry collection Child Whispers was published by Bukukatta.
Norman Erikson Pasaribu is an award-winning poet, fiction writer, and literary translator. He was born in Jakarta, 1990. His collection of stories, Hanya Kamu yang Tahu Berapa Lama Lagi Aku Harus Menunggu, came out in 2014 and was shortlisted for Khatulistiwa Literary Award. One story was included in Best Kompas Stories 2012. His collection of poems, Sergius Mencari Bacchus, won first prize at the Jakarta Arts Council poetry manuscript competition 2015 and was a finalist of Khatulistiwa Literary Award for Poetry. His poems have appeared in Asymptote, Modern Poetry in Translation, Asia Literary Review, and Cordite Poetry Review. He is based in Jakarta.
Jessica Jemalem Ginting is a poet, translator, editor, and comic writer from Jakarta, Indonesia, currently residing in London, England. Her poetry has been published in Toho Journal, Chogwa Zine, The New Verse News, Bristol Poetry Anthology, and Anak Sastra. Her newest poetry collection, Voyages, was published by Bottlecap Press in 2021. Other titles she's worked on as an editor and writer include: the poetry and art zine, UTOPIA (2020), and the Indonesia edition of CultureSmart! (2021), by Kuperard Publishers. Her debut collection, Moon Petals, was published in 2017. Jessica is also the writer and creator of the original Indonesian superhero comic, ROSANA!

Rio Johan has published three books in Indonesia: a collection of short stories titled Aksara Amananuna (The Alphabet of Amananunna, 2014); and two novels, Ibu Susu (Mother’s Milk, 2017) and Buanglah Hajat pada Tempatnya (Dump Your Business in the Right Place, 2020). He won the 2018 Khatulistiwa Literary Award for the First/Second Book Category for Ibu Susu. His fourth book, a short story collection Rekayasa Buah (Fruit Engineering) is going to be published in June 2021. He has published some of his self-translated stories in MĀNOA: A Pacific Journal of International Writing and Samovar and has also translated some works from English and French to Indonesian. Nathania Silalahi is a Chow Chow owner interested in literary translation and short story writing. She has a B.A. in Philosophy, Politics & Economics and currently works in the education sector.
Ruby Astari was born in Jakarta, in November 1981. She writes fiction and non-fiction in addition to translating texts from Indonesian to English and vice-versa. A number of her works have appeared in kaWanku, SPICE!, and Story Magazine, and online in Jendela360.com, Magdalene.co, Lakilakibaru.or.id, Konde.co, Empuan.id, and Voxpop.id. A freelance writer for Kontenesia.com, she has written a YA thriller novel called Reva’s Tale (published by Ice Cube, Gramedia). Her English-language poetry collection, A Phoenix Speaks, is in the process of being published.

Chiara Situmorang is a writer, editor, and admirer of the moon. Her work has appeared or is forthcoming in Uncanny, Crow & Cross Keys, and Dwelling Literary, among others. Chandra Bientang began her writing career as a content writer. Her debut novel, Dua Dini Hari, was published in 2019 by Noura Publishing. The novel received translation support from the Indonesian National Book Committee through the LitRi Translation Funding Program. In the same year, she was selected as a notable emerging writer by the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival. She studied Philosophy at the University of Indonesia, which strengthened her desire to become a writer. Currently, she is working on an anthology of short stories. Winner Wijaya was born in Surabaya, 1995 and grew up in Malang, East Java. He likes to make films since the fifth grade of elementary school, he was taught by his school teacher. Every weekend, with his friends, he makes a movie with the MiniDV handycam. They tried many fun things: painting the walls of the house green for chroma keying, wearing ghost masks, making strange stories, and so on. In 2020 he graduated as a Bachelor of Arts from Multimedia Nusantara University, majoring in Film. Now continuing his studies by taking the Masters program in Systematic Philosophy at STFT Widya Sasana. His film, Ojek Lusi, earned him the best short documentary award at the 2017 Documentary Film Festival and a 2018 Citra Cup nomination. It has also been screened at film festivals in more than 10 countries.
Rayner Wijaya was born in 1997. Graduated in 2019 from Prasetya Mulya University with a Bachelor of Economics degree. It was this background that helped Rayner's career as a producer. Since 2018 Rayner has produced several commercials and short films. Currently, Rayner and his brother, Winner, are building a production house with the name Hore Besok Libur! The purpose of this cheerful name is to show that they will make films that are fun for everyone to enjoy.
Paula Nanlohy aspires to be a journalistic photographer. She puts great concern on issues related to gender, human rights, and culture. she hopes to talk about these issues through her photography works.
Dea Ratna is a writer and photographer based in Indonesia. As a queer Indonesian with experiences abroad, Dea's works always lie in the intersection between race, gender, sexuality, and postcolonialism. After studying photography for some time in Singapore, Dea started to experiment with time-based works, like videos and performances.
Andree Zulkarnain is an undergraduate student at the Faculty of Film and Television at Jakarta Institute of the Arts with a producing major. Since high school, he has often made visual stories and found love for films and photos as storytelling mediums. According to him, those mediums can share and express feelings that are difficult to manifest otherwise.

Rickdy Vanduwin has an interest in gender, sexuality, and climate crisis issues. His career began as a Staff Writer at Affinity Magazine, a web-based magazine in the United States. In 2017, he founded the Resource Center on Gender, Sexuality, and Human Rights Studies Udayana (GSHR Udayana), a safe space to study intersectionality. He currently works as a research officer at the Resilience Development Initiative and works under the Children, Social Welfare, and Health (CSWH) cluster. In his spare time, he helps small non-profit organizations to develop their websites professionally.
